Super Mario 64 on Atari Jaguar Runs at 12fps, and That Chain Chomp Will Haunt Your Dreams

Super Mario 64 on the Atari Jaguar is now a thing that exists, sort of, with a modder called BudFolk showing off an experimental fan port running on Atari’s ill-fated “64-bit” console, complete with Peach’s Castle, bits of Bob-omb Battlefield and a front-facing Chain Chomp that looks like it crawled out of a nightmare.

It runs at around 12fps, it’s fragile, and you can’t actually download it, but it’s still a properly impressive bit of retro wizardry, and it raises a few questions about how it was made. So should you get excited, or just enjoy the video and move on? Let me explain.

How Did Super Mario 64 End Up on the Atari Jaguar?

According to Time Extension, this isn’t a straight port at all, since the code has been rewritten from the original N64 ROM in pure assembly, with every N64 system, from the 3D rendering to the sound, rebuilt as a Jaguar-friendly workaround.

To keep things moving, objects that aren’t on screen are simply removed, which is the sort of shortcut you have to take when you’re cramming Nintendo’s flagship 3D game onto hardware that was never designed for it!

BudFolk shared the footage on YouTube, and GoNintendo has also picked up the project, so it’s very much doing the rounds this week. Here’s what’s working so far:

  • The Peach’s Castle hub
  • Snippets of Bob-omb Battlefield and Tiny-Huge Island
  • Enemies including Koopa Troopas and King Bob-omb
  • That Chain Chomp, which deserves its own bullet point
  • Performance of roughly 12fps, down from the N64’s 30fps

Lest We ForgetAtari marketed the Jaguar as a 64-bit machine with the slogan “Do the Math,” which makes it pretty funny that it’s taken a fan, decades later, to finally put a 64 game on it.

Wait, Is It Running on a Real Jaguar?

Not in the main video, which is actually running in the BigPEmu emulator, which likely gives it a bit of a speed boost over the real thing.

There is a second video showing it on original Jaguar hardware, though, and it only takes a slight performance hit there, which is honestly more than I expected from a console that ran some of its own games like a very shiny potato.

Time Extension calls it an incredibly fragile build, and the music in particular seems to struggle, so this is much more of a tech demo than something you’d sit down and play for a few hours.

Was This Super Mario 64 Port Vibe Coded?

Here’s where things get a bit murky, because Time Extension notes that the video description reads like it might have been written or translated by AI, which raises the question of how much of the project itself was vibe coded.

There’s no confirmation either way, and writing assembly for the Jaguar is a seriously niche skill, so I wouldn’t rush to judge, but in a month where the community has been arguing loudly about AI-made ports, it’s a fair question to ask.

Quick NoteBudFolk isn’t planning a full game or a playable demo, so there’s nothing to download, and honestly, given how protective Nintendo is of Mario, that’s probably the smartest way to keep this project alive.

Should You Care About Super Mario 64 on the Atari Jaguar?

As a piece of gaming history and a showcase of what talented modders can squeeze out of weird old hardware, absolutely, because seeing Peach’s Castle on a Jaguar is the kind of “what if” that retro fans love to argue about.

As something to play, though, there’s nothing to grab and probably never will be, so this is a watch-the-video-and-marvel situation.

If you like this sort of beautiful madness, it’s not even the only strange Mario 64 project this month, since we’ve also covered how Super Mario 64 on Vectrex became a glowing wireframe marvel, so at this rate it’ll be running on a toaster by Christmas. Who’s taking bets?
