After months of speculation, BCCI has finally announced the starting date for the 2025 IPL season. Rajeev Shukla, the vice president of BCCI announced the date after the BCCI Special General Meeting in Mumbai earlier this month. Speculation was building up as the news came that the Indian IPL League is starting on 14th March. Rajeev Shukla cleared the air during an interview, saying, “IPL is going to start from March 23.”
The last IPL 2024 season began on March 22, with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru facing off against the fan-favorite Chennai Super Kings. The final was held on May 26 at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium. This year, the Indian Premier League will start with the defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders taking on a yet-to-be-announced opponent.
While Mr Shukla was talking to the reporter, he said that the venue of the Indian Premier League will be announced soon. But one thing is for certain, the starting match will be held in Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Not only that, Kolkata will also host the Qualifiers 2 and the finals of the IPL 2025 as they are the defending champions.
IPL 2025 will feature a total of 74 matches, just like the previous three seasons. However, this is ten fewer than the 84 matches originally projected by IPL in 2022 when media rights for the 2023-27 cycle were sold.
The BCCI has opted against increasing the 2025 season to 84 matches to help Indian international players manage their workload. India is the favorite to reach their third straight World Test Championship final. That is scheduled for June 11 at Lord’s. The BCCI is making sure that players get adequate rest to prepare, should they qualify.
