Smash 64 Recompiled PC Port Promises Ultrawide, High FPS and Smash Remix, and It’s Proudly ‘Not AI Slop’

Smash 64 Recompiled, a new static recompilation and native PC port of the original Super Smash Bros. on N64, has popped up with a “coming soon” trailer, promising high frame rates, low input lag, proper ultrawide support and compatibility with the hugely popular Smash Remix mod.

The developers are also making a big point of the fact that this one is built by humans, which is a very 2026 thing to put in a trailer, and after the messy AI-assisted Smash port earlier this year, honestly, I get why. So is this the Smash 64 PC port we were promised the first time round? Let’s find out!

Who’s Behind Smash 64 Recompiled?

According to Time Extension, the project is being led by SrBananaMan64, with Boopie joining the team in mid-September. It actually started back in October 2024 with a developer called ZestyDev, who got the game running without any extras, but after things stalled SrBananaMan64 restarted the work in a fresh repository.

Like the other N64Recomp projects, including the brilliant Zelda and Donkey Kong 64 ports, this isn’t emulation, because the original game code is translated into native PC code, which is why you can get things like proper widescreen and high frame rates without the game falling over.

What Does the Trailer Promise?

The official trailer runs through a pretty tasty feature list:

  • High frame rate support
  • Low input lag, which matters a lot for a fighting game
  • Properly scaled UI for ultrawide displays
  • Day-one mod and texture pack support through N64Recomp
  • Compatibility with Smash Remix, the fan mod that adds new characters, stages, items and music
  • Bespoke mods and quality-of-life additions

That Smash Remix support is the headline for me, because Remix has basically become the definitive way to play Smash 64 for a lot of fans, and having it running natively on PC with modern frills is a very appealing combo indeed!

Quick NoteAs with every recomp, no Nintendo assets are included, so you’ll need your own copy of the game, which you will of course have dumped from your own cartridge, and definitely not “found” somewhere on the open seas.

Why Does “Not AI Slop” Matter Here?

Back in May, a developer called JRickey released Battleship, an AI-assisted Smash 64 PC port, and it got a fair bit of stick for being inaccurate, buggy and missing features. SrBananaMan64 has made it very clear that this new port is different, telling fans it “is not AI slop!” and that it was made to set a better example of what a recomp should be.

Whether you care about how the sausage is made or not, accuracy really matters for Smash 64, because the competitive scene still plays it seriously and the tiniest change in hitboxes or timing gets noticed immediately. A port that’s been carefully reverse-engineered by people who know the game inside out is a much safer bet than one stitched together at speed, isn’t it?

InterestinglyEven in the comments, some fans are sceptical of any decompilation project with AI in its history, because it’s hard to verify that every line was checked against the original. That debate isn’t going anywhere soon.

When Can You Actually Play It?

There’s no release date yet, just “coming soon”. The team says it has written loads of patches and refactored the code, but still needs to test it across different platforms and finish off some extra features and mods, so I wouldn’t clear your weekend just yet.

If you can’t wait, Smash 64 is already on Nintendo Switch Online’s Expansion Pack, or you can go the emulator route, but neither gets you ultrawide, high frame rates and Smash Remix in one tidy package.

Should You Care About Smash 64 Recompiled?

If you love Smash 64, or you’ve been eyeing Smash Remix but couldn’t be bothered with the setup, absolutely, because this could end up being the best way to play it on PC. It’ll be free, it’ll run natively, and it sounds like it’s being made with proper care, which is more than you can say for a lot of official re-releases.

The recomp scene keeps on delivering, and if you want more proof that fans are out-porting Nintendo, check out how Wind Waker got a native Switch port before Nintendo could be bothered!
