Silent Hill Townfall Patch 1.4.0 Finally Nerfs The Weight, and Honestly It’s About Time

The first big Silent Hill Townfall patch is out today, and version 1.4.0 takes aim squarely at The Weight, the hulking stalker that had a lot of players tearing their hair out, by swapping its instant-kill grab for heavy damage on Story Mode and Normal and making it far less obsessed with camping your objectives.

Developer Screen Burn promised last week that balancing changes were coming as soon as possible, and fair play, it’s actually arrived quickly, with changes to stealth, melee and even the final puzzle on top. So does it fix the game’s biggest problem? Let’s find out!

What Does the Silent Hill Townfall Patch Actually Change?

According to the patch notes reported by MP1st, update 1.4.0 (shown as 2.004 on consoles) is a small download across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and the Epic Games Store, and there’s a surprising amount packed into it:

  • The Weight’s grab: heavy damage instead of instant death on Story Mode and Normal
  • The Weight’s AI: less likely to park itself in front of your objective, stops searching the same spot over and over, and hunts you less aggressively
  • Stealth: enemies react less to gunfire, running and you diving into hiding spots
  • Melee: fewer instant counter-attacks after you land a hit, no more grapples while you’re blocking (The Weight excepted), and more time to react after breaking free
  • Puzzles: a collectible manual for the Remote Systems Control console, and a clearer pipe layout in the Aux Line puzzle
  • Fixes: a Part 5 progression blocker at CEG Tower, out-of-bounds exploits, ultrawide letterbox support, missing AZERTY bindings, and better frame pacing with less streaming stutter

Quick TipThe instant-death change only applies on Story Mode and Normal, so if you’ve been bouncing off The Weight on a higher difficulty, it’s still going to be properly nasty. Dropping the difficulty for those sections is a perfectly respectable choice, nobody’s watching!

Why Was The Weight Such a Problem in the First Place?

The short version is that Townfall’s atmosphere and story got a lot of love when it launched last month, but its stealth sections really didn’t, with Video Games Chronicle calling it a “flawed masterpiece” in its review largely because of how infuriating those sections were.

An enemy that kills you in one grab, hangs around exactly where you need to go and seems to know where you are at all times isn’t scary after the third or fourth death, it’s just annoying, and once a horror game becomes annoying rather than frightening, the spell is honestly broken. Is the Silent Hill Townfall Patch Making It Too Easy?

I can already hear some of you shouting that horror should be punishing, and I get it, but nerfing an instant kill to heavy damage on the lower difficulties still leaves The Weight dangerous, it just means one mistake costs you a chunk of health instead of ten minutes of progress, which feels like a sensible middle ground.

The stealth and melee tweaks are a bit more of a gamble, because enemies hearing you less could make some areas feel a touch toothless, but it’s worth remembering that these changes are based on the patch notes rather than hands-on time, so the real test is how it plays now. Is less frustrating the same as less scary? Not necessarily!

It’s also refreshing to see a developer listen and act within about a week, which is a lot more than some games manage, and if you want to see what happens when a launch goes sideways with no quick fix, my piece on Half Sword’s disappointing release is a cautionary tale and a half.

So Is Now the Time to Play Silent Hill Townfall?

My take is yes, if you were on the fence because of the stealth complaints, this patch removes the single biggest reason to wait, and you’ll be playing a smoother, less frustrating version than the one reviewers got at launch.

If you already gave up halfway through, it’s absolutely worth downloading the update and having another go, because the bits people loved, the atmosphere and the story, were never the problem. Isn’t it nice when a developer actually fixes the thing everyone complained about?
