Atari 800XL Replica Is Coming in April 2027, but £199.99 Too Much for Nostalgia

1

The Atari 800XL replica is officially happening because Atari and Retro Games Ltd have announced THE 800XL.

It is a full-sized recreation of the 1983 home computer with a proper mechanical keyboard, a working cartridge slot and HDMI out, and pre-orders are open right now for £199.99 ahead of shipping in April 2027.

That’s a lot of money for a box of 8-bit memories, so the real question is whether this is a lovingly made bit of kit or just a very expensive shelf ornament for people who used to type POKE commands into a telly. Let me explain.

What Do You Actually Get With the Atari 800XL Replica?

Going by the announcement coverage from VGC and Time Extension, the spec sheet is honestly a lot more generous than I expected, and it reads like it was written by people who actually care about the old machine:

  • Price: £199.99, with pre-orders open now
  • Shipping: from 23 April 2027
  • Keyboard: full-sized and mechanical, not a painted-on prop
  • Cartridge slot: a working one, so original carts are on the table
  • Output: HDMI, so no hunting for an RF lead in the loft
  • Built in: Atari BASIC, plus 25 games including M.U.L.E., Boulder Dash, Star Raiders II, Miner 2049er and Crystal Castles
  • Compatibility: Atari 400, 800, XL and XE software, plus Atari 5200 games
  • Extras: USB loading for your own files, save states and up to 30 seconds of rewind

That USB loading feature is the bit that’ll make a certain type of person very happy indeed, because it means you’re not stuck with the 25 games in the box, and you can load up all those disk images you definitely, totally, 100% own the originals of… right?

Fun FactThere are two hidden games tucked away in there as well, Castle Crisis and Super Breakout, and you unlock them by plugging in an analogue controller, which is a lovely little nod to the paddle-and-dial era of Atari gaming.

Who Is Making This Thing, and Should We Trust Them?

Retro Games Ltd isn’t some random newcomer, because it’s the company behind the full-sized Commodore 64 and VIC-20 revivals and a full-sized ZX Spectrum, and it already teamed up with Atari on THE400 Mini back in 2024, with a full-sized Amiga 1200 apparently on the way this December too.

Time Extension also points out that Plaion, the publisher behind the upcoming Neo Geo AES+, is involved, so this is a proper retail product with some serious muscle behind it rather than a Kickstarter you’ll be chasing refunds on in 2029.

Retro Games’ COO Stuart Chiplin says “a lot of work has gone into making THE 800XL feel authentic”, and that’s exactly the right thing to be focused on, isn’t it?

Is £199.99 Actually Worth It for an 8-Bit Computer?

Here’s where I’ll be upfront with you all, because £199.99 is not impulse-buy money, and anyone who just wants to play Missile Command for twenty minutes can do that through an emulator on a phone that’s been sitting in a drawer since 2019.

The thing is, emulators can’t give you that full-size mechanical keyboard, and with the 800XL being a home computer rather than a console, the keyboard is basically the whole personality of the machine, so for anyone who wants to type BASIC programs or play the old text-heavy games properly, that hardware actually matters.

Better than a mini and actually worth it are two different things though, and the value here really depends on whether you have the 800XL itch or not!

Quick NoteOnly the UK price has been confirmed in the coverage so far, so if you’re in the US or Europe, keep an eye on Atari’s official 800XL page before you get too attached to a currency conversion.

[ADD PERSONAL NOTE: any memories of the Atari 8-bit machines, or of the C64 or Spectrum revivals from Retro Games]

So, Should You Pre-Order the Atari 800XL Replica?

If you grew up with one of these, or you’re the kind of retro collector who’s already got THE C64 and THE Spectrum lined up on a shelf, this looks like a really thoughtful revival, and with a real cartridge slot, USB loading and 5200 support it’s far more than just a pretty case with a Raspberry Pi rattling around inside.

If you’re just curious though, I’d wait for proper reviews of the keyboard feel and the emulation accuracy before handing over two hundred quid, especially as it doesn’t ship until April 2027 and there’s zero rush. And if you need something retro to tide you over until then, my list of GBA hidden gems is a lot cheaper than a new computer, trust you me!
