Pokémon Monomyth Is Finally Out, and This Free Emerald ROM Hack Promises 360 Pokémon and 75+ Hours

Pokémon Monomyth is finally out, with Team Monomyth releasing version 1.0 of its enormous Pokémon Emerald ROM hack for free on 30 October, and after years of trailers and teases the fan project promises a brand new region, 360 Pokémon and more than 75 hours of play.

That’s a bigger promise than some official Pokémon games make, and it’s all crammed into a Game Boy Advance ROM, which is frankly ridiculous in the best way. So is Pokémon Monomyth actually worth your weekend, and what do you need to play it? Let’s find out!

What’s Actually in Pokémon Monomyth?

Monomyth takes you to the Athanto region, a brand new map that, according to the official Monomyth site, is packed with dangerous wilds, secrets and side quests, and Retro Dodo sums it up as a full-on new adventure rather than a quick remix of Hoenn. Here’s the big list:

  • Pokémon: Over 360 new and returning Pokémon, with new moves, abilities and animations
  • Length: More than 75 hours of gameplay
  • Music: 200+ original tracks
  • Variety: Thousands of coat variations for wild Pokémon
  • Post-game: Contest Halls, Trainer Hill and a Battle Frontier
  • Multiplayer: Link Cable trading and asynchronous multiplayer
  • Price: Free, distributed as a patch

Two hundred new music tracks on a GBA hack is genuinely nuts, and the coat variations mean even a common early-route Pokémon could look different from everyone else’s, which is exactly the kind of thing that turns a casual playthrough into a very long night!

Seven Years in the Making, or Six?

Most coverage has been saying six years of development, but HeldGames points to a director’s post that dates the start of work to 7 November 2019, which makes it closer to seven, and either way that’s a ridiculous amount of love poured into a fan game.

It’s built on the pokeemerald decompilation and the Emerald Expansion battle engine, which is a big part of why modern hacks like this can do so much more than the ones from a decade ago, when “new region” usually meant the same towns with different names… and a suspiciously familiar gym leader!

Quick NoteMonomyth is distributed as a patch, so you need to apply it to your own copy of Pokémon Emerald (USA/Europe), which you’ll of course “legally” source by dumping the cartridge you definitely already own.

Can Your Retro Handheld Actually Run It?

This is where it gets a bit technical, because the patched game hits 32MB, which is the GBA’s maximum ROM size, so not every setup will be happy with it. Based on HeldGames’ breakdown, here’s what to expect:

  • mGBA (PC or handheld): Should run it without any fuss
  • gpSP on low-RAM devices: Devices with 64MB of RAM or less may struggle, and unzipping the ROM is the usual fix
  • Real hardware: GBA and Game Boy Micro work with a 32MB flash cart that supports the real-time clock, like the EZ-Flash Omega
  • DS and DS Lite: No link port, so no cable trading

Trading is the slightly fiddly bit, because online trading needs a desktop PC with a special mGBA build and a Lua script, cable trading on hardware needs two flash carts, and Monomyth can’t trade with official Gen 3 games at all, so your old Emerald team is staying where it is, I’m afraid!

Should You Play Pokémon Monomyth?

If you’ve got a cheap retro handheld running mGBA and you like Pokémon even a little bit, then yes, absolutely, because it costs nothing and a 75-hour new adventure with a proper post-game is better value than… well, pretty much anything with a price tag.

The only reason to wait is if you’re desperate for online battles, as the Athanto Colosseum is still under construction with a tentative late 2027 target, and if Monomyth leaves you hungry for more, our list of the best completed Pokémon GBA ROM hacks will happily eat the rest of your free time!
