Arcade Archives Fighting Golf Is Out Today, and It’s the Game Behind The Simpsons’ Lee Carvallo Joke

Arcade Archives Fighting Golf is out today, 8 October, on Switch, PS4, PS5 and Xbox Series, bringing SNK’s 1988 arcade golf game to modern consoles courtesy of Hamster, and it’s the game widely believed to have inspired one of The Simpsons’ best video game jokes.

Yes, I’m talking about Lee Carvallo’s Putting Challenge, the gloriously boring golf game Bart gets instead of Bonestorm, and the real game behind the gag is now an $8 download. Is it worth a few quid, or is it just a meme with a price tag? Let me explain.

Wait, Where’s the Fighting in Fighting Golf?

Here’s the funny part, because despite the name, there’s absolutely no fighting in Fighting Golf whatsoever, it’s just straight-up golf, and as Time Extension points out, it was known in the West as Lee Trevino’s Fighting Golf, with the real-life golfer front and centre.

You pick one of four golfers, each with their own strengths in distance or accuracy, then take on 18 holes packed with three types of rough, two types of bunker, water and dense trees, and the game even gives you advice before each hole and picks the best club for the distance… which, honestly, is more help than most modern golf games give you!

Fun FactThe Simpsons episode in question is “Marge Be Not Proud” from season 7, and the parody became so beloved that fans have made their own playable versions of Lee Carvallo’s Putting Challenge over the years.

How Much Is Arcade Archives Fighting Golf, and Which Version Should You Get?

As with recent Hamster releases, there are actually two flavours depending on your platform, and according to Gematsu, the newer Arcade Archives 2 version gets a couple of extra goodies:

  • Arcade Archives Fighting Golf (Switch, PS4): $7.99 / ¥838
  • Arcade Archives 2 Fighting Golf (PS5, Xbox Series): $9.99 / ¥1,100
  • Upgrade from Arcade Archives to Arcade Archives 2: $2.99 / ¥330
  • Modes: Original, Hi Score and Caravan, with Arcade Archives 2 adding a new Time Attack mode
  • Extras: rewind, rapid-fire, multiple save slots, online leaderboards, difficulty and screen settings, plus VRR support on Arcade Archives 2

Time Attack is a fun little twist for a golf game, because it’s about how fast you get round rather than your score, which feels like it’d turn a calm round of golf into a frantic panic, and that’s sort of the closest this game will ever get to actual fighting, isn’t it?

Is a 1988 Golf Game Actually Worth $8 in 2026?

I’ll be upfront with you all, this one isn’t for everyone, because arcade golf from 1988 is going to feel pretty simple next to anything modern, and the main draw here, let’s be honest, is the Simpsons connection rather than the golf itself.

That said, Hamster does a consistently good job with these releases, the rewind feature and leaderboards give it a bit more life than just booting up a ROM, and $7.99 is a fair price for a properly preserved, legal way to play an SNK arcade game on your TV without hunting down an original board, or doing whatever some people, definitely not me, do with MAME!

If you’ve ever wondered whether paying for old games on modern hardware is worth it, that exact question got a proper grilling in I Bought Pokemon Fire Red on the Nintendo Switch So You Don’t Have To, and spoiler alert, it depends a lot on what you’re getting for the money.

So Should You Tee Off or Skip It?

My take is simple, if you’re a Simpsons fan, an SNK completionist or someone who just loves weird bits of gaming history, Arcade Archives Fighting Golf is a cheap, harmless bit of fun and a brilliant thing to show your mates, so go for it.

If you actually want a golf game you’ll still be playing next month though, this probably isn’t it, and you’d be better off wishlisting it and waiting for one of Hamster’s regular sales. Either way, isn’t it nice that Bart’s least favourite present finally has a real-life version you can buy?
