A Cyberpunk 2077 movie is officially in the works at Paramount Pictures, with Transformers and G.I. Joe producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura attached to produce alongside CD Projekt Red, according to a report from Deadline.
There’s no director, no writer, no cast and no release date yet, so this is very much the “we’ve bought the rights and booked a meeting room” stage, but it’s still a big moment for a game that was an absolute laughing stock back in 2020.
So is this good news, or should we be nervous? Let me explain.
What Do We Actually Know About the Cyberpunk 2077 Movie?
Honestly, not a lot, and that’s worth saying upfront before anyone starts fan-casting their dream V. Deadline’s report, which was also picked up by VGC and Gematsu, boils down to a handful of facts:
- Studio: Paramount Pictures
- Producers: Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers, G.I. Joe, The Meg) and CD Projekt Red
- Setting: the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, so Night City in some shape or form
- Story, director, writer, cast: nothing announced, Gematsu notes plot details “have not been announced”
- Release date: nope, not even a vague year
CD Projekt Red being a producer is the bit I’d hold on to, because the studio has been pretty protective of its worlds lately, and having them in the room is a much better sign than a studio buying a logo and doing whatever it likes with it, isn’t it?
Hasn’t Cyberpunk Already Done This Before?
Sort of! Back in 2023, CD Projekt Red announced a live-action Cyberpunk project with Anonymous Content, and it’s not clear from the reports whether this Paramount film is that same project finding a new home or something entirely separate, so treat any link between them as unconfirmed for now.
The adaptation that actually proved the world works on screen, though, is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the Studio Trigger anime on Netflix that genuinely dragged people back to the game in 2022.
VGC points out that Edgerunners season two starts streaming on 20 October, so Night City is about to have a very busy few months!
Fun FactAccording to CD Projekt Red, Cyberpunk 2077 has now sold 40 million copies, and the Phantom Liberty expansion has sold 15 million, which is a frankly ridiculous comeback for a game Sony pulled from the PlayStation Store barely a week after launch.
Is Lorenzo di Bonaventura the Right Person for Night City?
This is where I get a bit twitchy, because di Bonaventura’s name is attached to the Transformers films, and while those made eye-watering amounts of money, nobody has ever accused them of having a delicate touch with storytelling… or with explosions, for that matter!
Then again, Cyberpunk is a world of chrome, gunfights, corporate villains and cars that cost more than a house, so big-budget spectacle isn’t exactly the wrong fit, and the real question is whether whoever writes it understands that the best bits of the game are the quiet, grubby human stories, not just Keanu Reeves shouting at people.
Worth NotingParamount has been busy on the games front lately, so if you want the bigger picture of what the company is doing with gaming, our piece on how Paramount and Warner Bros. merged their games divisions is a handy bit of homework, and yes, there will be a quiz!
Should Gamers Actually Care About a Cyberpunk 2077 Movie?
Here’s my consumer-first take: a film doesn’t change anything about the game you can buy today, and Cyberpunk 2077 with Phantom Liberty is in a genuinely great place in 2026, so if you skipped it because of the launch mess, the game itself is the thing worth your money right now, not a film that’s probably years away.
Video game adaptations have had a much better run recently, though, and CD Projekt Red has already shown with The Witcher and Edgerunners that it can survive the jump to screens, so I’m cautiously optimistic, with heavy emphasis on the cautious. Let’s just hope it ends up more Edgerunners than… well, you know which video game films I’m thinking of!
