Mafia III Definitive Edition Is Now Native on PS5 and Xbox Series, and It’s a Free 60fps Upgrade

Mafia III: Definitive Edition is now available natively on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and the best part is that it’s a free upgrade if you already own the game on PS4 or Xbox One, with 2K and Hangar 13 dropping it out of nowhere to mark the game’s tenth anniversary.

It’s not a remaster, and it’s not going to fix everything people grumbled about back in 2016, but 60fps New Bordeaux for the princely sum of nothing is hard to complain about. So what’s actually changed, and is it worth your time? Let’s find out!

What Does the Mafia III Definitive Edition Upgrade Actually Do?

According to Gematsu and MP1st, which both went through 2K’s notes, the new native versions and the accompanying update 1.12 bring the following:

  • 60fps gameplay on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with real-time cutscenes also running at 60fps
  • Pre-rendered movies stay at 30fps, so don’t panic if the odd cutscene looks a bit stiffer
  • Free upgrade for existing PS4 and Xbox One owners
  • Bug fixes for progression blockers in missions like “Get Enzo Conti” and “Kill Tommy Marcano”, plus crash fixes and trophy and achievement tracking fixes
  • PC update with new frame rate caps of 120, 144, 180 and 240fps, and an option to turn off window borders

There’s no word on resolution targets, which is a little annoying, but the big headline is the frame rate, and honestly, for a game with this much driving and shooting, that’s the upgrade that matters most, isn’t it?

Quick NoteIf you don’t own it yet, Game Informer reports Mafia III is 80% off on digital storefronts for a limited time, so check your store of choice before you pay full whack!

What’s Included in Mafia III: Definitive Edition?

The Definitive Edition is the whole lot in one package, so you’re not hunting around for bits of DLC like it’s 2017, and Game Informer lists it as including:

  • The base game
  • All three story expansions: Faster, Baby!, Stones Unturned and Sign of the Times
  • The Family Kick-Back Pack
  • The Judge, Jury & Executioner Weapons Pack

It’s also part of Mafia: The Omertà Collection, alongside Mafia, Mafia II and Mafia: The Old Country, so if you’ve been eyeing the whole series, that bundle now has a properly current-gen version of the third game in it too!

Is Mafia III Actually Good Now, Though?

Let me be upfront with you all: Mafia III’s problems were never really about frame rate. The story, the soundtrack and Lincoln Clay’s revenge tale through a fictional 1968 New Orleans were widely praised, but the open world got a lot of stick for repetitive “take over this racket” missions that started to feel like doing chores for the mob.

A smoother 60fps doesn’t change the mission design, so if the grind put you off a decade ago, it’ll probably still put you off now. [ADD PERSONAL NOTE: your own take on Mafia III’s story versus its open-world filler] But if you bounced off because it ran a bit rough on last-gen hardware, this is the best excuse you’ll get to go back.

Fun FactMafia: Definitive Edition, the 2020 remake of the first game, got its own free 60fps current-gen upgrade back in August, so 2K has been quietly working its way through the whole family. Very on brand for a mob game, really!

So Should You Grab the Mafia III Definitive Edition Upgrade?

If you already own it on PS4 or Xbox One, this is a no-brainer, it’s free, it’s 60fps, and it fixes bugs that have been sitting there for years. Just grab the native version and enjoy the smoother drive through New Bordeaux.

If you’ve never played it, the 80% discount makes it an easy gamble, and it’s a good reminder that remasters don’t always need a big price tag, unlike some, as we found when we asked whether the Oblivion Remaster was worth buying. Free upgrades like this are exactly what players want more of, and fair play to 2K for this one!
