PSVR 2 Vanishes From Sony’s US Store as Stock Dries Up, So Is Sony Quietly Killing Its VR Headset?

PSVR 2 has been removed from Sony’s own PlayStation web store in the US and Japan, and with new stock drying up at Amazon, Best Buy and Walmart too, it’s starting to look an awful lot like Sony is quietly letting its VR headset fade away without so much as a goodbye.

Sony hasn’t said a word about it officially, which is very on brand for how PlayStation has treated VR lately, so is PSVR 2 actually dead, and should you be hunting for one before they’re gone? Let me explain.

Is PSVR 2 Being Discontinued?

Officially, nobody knows, because Sony hasn’t commented, but as Road to VR reports, the headset has been disappearing from Sony’s direct store since around mid-October, and the wider picture isn’t exactly encouraging. Here’s where things stand right now:

  • US and Japan: no longer sold on Sony’s PlayStation web store
  • UK and EU: still showing as in stock on Sony’s store
  • Canada, Australia and New Zealand: Sony’s store points you to third-party retailers
  • Amazon: stock of both the standalone unit and the Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle has “all but flatlined”
  • Best Buy and Walmart: mostly third-party resellers, with new units marked up to around $750 and beyond

Quick NoteThis didn’t come out of nowhere, because VR.org spotted US PlayStation Direct listing it as “Currently Unavailable” back in September, with Best Buy marketplace sellers asking a frankly ridiculous $855 or more for a new unit.

How Did We Get Here?

Honestly, the writing has been on the wall for a while, because PSVR 2 launched in February 2023 at $550, Bloomberg reported a production pause in March 2024 after Sony had built well over 2 million units, and the price was then cut permanently to $399 in early 2025, which is usually what happens when a company is trying to clear warehouses rather than build new ones.

Along the way, Sony closed London Studio, which made Blood & Truth, cut staff at Firesprite, the studio behind Horizon Call of the Mountain, and opened the headset up to PC VR games with an official adapter in August 2024, which felt like a generous gesture at the time… and in hindsight, looks a lot like a farewell present!

Should Current PSVR 2 Owners Be Worried?

Not immediately, because your headset will keep working with your PS5 and your existing library, and the PC adapter means you’ve got a whole second platform of games to fall back on, which is more than a lot of discontinued hardware can say.

The worry is more about the long term, because new first-party VR games have been thin on the ground for ages, and fewer headsets in the wild means even less reason for developers to bother. And remember, Sony has been offloading its VR assets lately, as we covered when Sony’s VR patents were sold to Meta, which didn’t exactly fill PSVR 2 owners with confidence either!

Quick TipIf you’re buying second-hand, make sure the seller includes both Sense controllers and check they hold a charge, because tracking down replacements on their own is only going to get harder from here.

Is a PSVR 2 Still Worth Buying in 2026?

At $399 brand new, with the PC adapter on the table, it was a genuinely decent deal, but at $750 to $855 from resellers, it absolutely is not, so please don’t let fear of missing out push you into paying double for a headset Sony itself seems to be walking away from.

If you’re in the UK or Europe, where Sony’s store still lists it, and you’ve been meaning to try Gran Turismo 7 or Resident Evil Village in VR, now is probably the last sensible chance to buy one new at the normal price. Everyone else is better off looking at used and refurbished units, which are going for a lot less than the scalper listings.

The Verdict: Wait, Buy or Forget It?

If you already own one, keep it and enjoy it, because nothing changes overnight, but don’t expect a stream of new big-budget games. If you don’t own one, only buy at or below the old $399 / £399.99 price, and if you’re willing to go down the PC route, look at the wider PC VR market before committing to a headset that might not have much of a future.
